Torpoint Town Council
POLICE STATION DEMOLITION
Work to demolish Torpoint’s former police station has started, with housing and a community hub set to be built in its place.
The work is being led by
Cornwall Council in liaison with the Torpoint Town Team Project
Board, whose members include Cornwall Councillors, town councillors, Antony
Estate, business and voluntary sector representatives, also representatives
from the Neighbourhood Plan steering group.
The plans for the new
development are currently being finalised, and will be subject to a public
consultation before work begins on the new construction.
The demolition work is expected
to last for around three months, but will not interfere with any ferry
operations during this period.
Cllr Olly Monk, Cornwall
Council portfolio holder for housing and planning said: "We are pleased to
be working alongside Torpoint Town Council and other partners on a project that
will revitalise the town centre through the creation of new homes, new
commercial and community space, public realm and a better connectivity between
the existing town centre and its water front.
"It is so important that
we continue to identify these opportunities for projects that will truly
benefit communities across Cornwall."
Cllr Gary Davis, member of
Torpoint Town Council and Chair of the Town Team Project Board, said: “The Town
Team Project Board is excited to be working towards the redevelopment of
Torpoint’s former police station with Cornwall Council.
"Our vision is to
transform this unused site into a vibrant community hub that will benefit
residents and visitors alike; and will include as part of the wider Lower Fore
Street development opportunity, 35 new homes. By repurposing this space,
we are not only revitalising the area but also creating opportunities for
social interaction, employment learning, and growth.”
“Our commitment is to keep any
disruption during the demolition work to a minimum. We understand the
importance of clear communication and will ensure that any necessary road
closures are well-publicised in advance.”
“Together with Cornwall Council
and Torpoint Town Council, we are proud to bring this project to life,
contributing to the betterment of our community.”
